Description/Abstract:

Exploring the role of graphic designer as mediator of form and content, source material combines factual letters from the Mass Observation Archives and unclassified found family photographs. Using graphic design as a tool for investigation, the resulting practice based outcomes explore different ways of representing the same woman’s life across three forms of printed page based media.

By exposing the role of graphic designer as mediator of information the final outcomes visually explore how meaning is constructed socially, historically and culturally. Investigating Jan Van Toorn’s techniques of dialogic practice, the viewer becomes aware of the mechanics of manipulation that are open to interpretation dependent on the viewers background.
