Andrea Gregson was artist in residence at Outlandia, an off-grid space, 3m x 3m x 4.7m up a steep forest track on a hillside with a prime view of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. During this time she made a series of ephemeral actions, collected objects, cast details in the landscape whilst exploring ideas of the Anthropocene. What do humans bring to this landscape, what actions and movements change this site?
At Outlandia, cut off from the path created a unique atmosphere in which to make work. One such experimental work was to hang cloth from the entrances and exits to the building. Acting as a mediator to these experiences, like flying flags or hanging curtains, it was a means to explore the space, situation and ideas. The fabric in the window billowed in response to the wind; tracing the temporal actions of air. The work, ‘Cascade’ connected human structures with natural forces. Blocking the doorway, like a vertical movement of water cutting through rock; the fall and folding of the fabric took on the flow of water. In another experimental work she wound cloth around the trunk of a tree next to Outlandia. Like a giant underskirt it gently caressed the surface of the bark as it inhaled and exhaled form. The inanimate cloth was given life, made visible by the wind.
Whilst trying to understand sculpturally how the land was formed through geological events, she made a series of wax castings of rocks. Painting hot wax over boulders and pouring it around stones created chance forms retracing the flow of water over the site. One such boulder wedged between a narrowing of the steep stream was cast over several hours, which when removed became light, translucent in its new wax form. Taking something from the landscape that was too heavy to move by hand and in respect to the forming of these rocks, the fragile casts were carried down the mountain. She also started a series of graphite tracings of rocks and large boulders on graph paper. The process of rubbing graphite over the surface of the rock and the weight of the hand embosses its form onto paper. These graphite tracings reveal the chance structures formed millions of years before.
