Description/Abstract:

Paper presentation for an international conference in Maastricht on the interplay between the book and the city. I was addressing the conference themes of reading practices in the city / sensing the city.

I introduced the JUNGLE FEVER artist book (2012/2014) and the ways it has been used as a vehicle to examine and reclaim various urban environments in London, Beirut, Singapore, Dusseldorf, Munich and Ahmedabad through a series of organised participatory events. I concentrated on the particular ways that the project explores the interplay between Labor, leisure and creativity and the importance of play in everyday life, quoting Robert Filliou. The paper concluded on the relevance of such a project in contexts other than artistic ones; the work place, tourism, self help industry.

I have extended the paper into a chapter for a forthcoming publication. The chapter describes briefly what happened at each activation of the user's guide and contextualises the work in relation to other such Fluxus like publications, but also to historical and contemporary participatory art and psychogeographic experiments. It also mentions the latest development of the project JUNGLE FEVER in Athens, for the exhibition project Gestures of Resistance, curated by Jean Wainwright in April 2017 in response "to our current general mood of political anxiety and alienation". (press release). The new JUNGLE FEVER in Athens map provides the itinerary of an organised procession as well as slogans and examples of playful gestures of resistance. Some of the slogans have been inscribed on 2 JUNGLE FEVER banners used in the procession.
