I was commissioned to create a series of portraits for a portraiture (from life) survey exhibition called 'Close drawn Portraits' at the Drawing Room, London. For the exhibition I created a series of portraits of older women who were in a group who 'knit for peace'. I also made portraits of their favourite artists to link it to my current research of creating portraits of inspiring artists (in oil and watercolour). Some of the other people in the exhibition were Barbara Hepworth, Pablo Picasso and David Hockney amongst others. I was also asked to create a performance where I created watercolours of visitors to the exhibition. A very interesting dynamic is creating when making portraits as you have to engage with the subject, the subject matter and the final work all while creating an engagement with the sitter to enable them to be comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. Very few people experience the kind of scrutiny that is experienced while sitting for a portrait.
