Becoming with Wheat (and Other More-Than-Human Others) 2018-2022 was developed as part of The Commons: Re-enchanting the World, an ACE funded project that I co-curated with Catherine Morland at the University of Reading’s Museum of English Rural Life, known as The MERL from 2020-2022. Becoming with Wheat… responded to the idea of a more-than-human commons, where a collective of human and non-human others are all in relation, interdependent and entangled.
Drawing on Annette Arlander’s articulation of the artistic-research process as being akin to that of a ‘dispersed vegetal being’, Becoming with Wheat… is a scattering, manifesting not as a single outcome, rather multiple crops, germinations, and cycles, many of which are speculative and interconnected in their growth and evolution: growing, milling, baking, eating, strawcraft, filming, anthotype making, and writing. It is an exploration of wheat, its histories, mythology, materiality, and relationships. Also central to the project are Donna Haraway’s ideas of companion species: The root of ‘companion’ being derived from the Latin cum panis meaning, ‘with bread’, reminding us of our relationship to others through food, our eating together and being eaten.
